 The Three Robbers, by Tomi Ungerer [$16.95 hardcover] – Ungerer catches a lot of heat Stateside. Once regaled during the 1960's for his genius as a children's book author and illustrator, he was tossed by the wayside after he produced protest literature and art, and erotica that lampooned modern society. Unable to cope with this French import's controversial material, America allowed Ungerer's name and images to fade from pop culture. However, Ungerer's influence left his mark on the likes of Shel Silverstein, James Marshall (creator of the children's book series "George & Martha"), and many others. His books are at last being reprinted in English. Successive generations of European children have grown up knowing The Three Robbers as a classic; perhaps a new generation of Americans will as well.
